Terri Gordon has been a faculty member at The New School for Public Engagement (
http://www.newschool.edu/public-engag...) since 2002. She has also taught at Barnard College and Columbia University. She received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University, where she specialized in modern French, German and British literature. She co-edited the WSQ (Women's Studies Quarterly) Citizenship issue (Spring/Summer 2010) and has published on the cabaret, post-war film, and performance art in the Third Reich. Her translation of Jean Genet's Elle was adapted for an off-Broadway production in the summer of 2002. Professor Gordon received the New School Distinguished University Teaching Award in 2003 and teaches interdisciplinary courses in the areas of ethics and literature, gender studies, and the aesthetics of the body. She is currently working on a book project on restorative justice in Chile, South Africa and Rwanda.
"I want to make sure that everything that goes on in the class matters. My classes tend to be pretty dynamic and fun. I tend to create a pretty safe space to encourage students to talk, to talk to me, to talk to each other, to experiment with ideas; it's almost an experimental space. But at the same time I try to push them to be rigorous. I think a typical undergraduate will tend to take contemporary courses that they recognize and in which the material seems sexy. So it's nice to get them somehow exposed to older material, ancient texts, original philosophical texts, and watch their intellectual world expand."
